Jefferson Award Winner: Janet Johnson

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Over 30 years spent practicing a hobby has helped to keep thousands of Chippewa Valley newborns snug and warm.

Knit one, purl two.  Knit one, purl two. It's a mantra for Janet Johnson a steady beat she's been marching to for most her life.  "When we moved here I decided I wanted to knit," remembers Janet.  "I tried teaching myself, and I did partially. Then I went up to the tech school and took classes up there."

If you listen closely her clicking needles have a story to tell. Janet is one of Mayo Clinic's most dedicated volunteers. "She's knit I believe it's over 8,000 newborn caps for us!" says Vicky Zehms, Director of Volunteer Services at Eau Claire's Mayo Clinic. "It's quite a significant accomplishment!"

Janet says simply, "I just like helping people, other people."  If you can't find her behind the knitting needles Janet is likely at her local church. She spends time each week helping to run the food pantry at Grace Lutheran.

Thanks to her big heart, families have full bellies and babies have warm heads. Now that's a 'yarn' of a tale.
