Donald Driver announces retirement from NFL

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- Green Bay Packers star Donald Driver says he will retire.

Driver appeared on ESPN's Mike and Mike show in New Orleans Thursday morning and said he will "hang up the cleats" in February, according to a report by WISN in Milwaukee.

I"m going to officially put the cleats on the shelf," he said. "I'm going to walk away from the game."

Driver said he would announce more February 6 when he goes back to Green Bay. That's when he's expected to announce his official retirement. Driver said he wanted to make the formal announcement in front of Green Bay's fans.

"I want to do it in front of the fans... something no player has ever done," he told Mike and Mike.

Driver's announcement is set for 11:00 a.m. February 6 in the Lambeau Field Atrium. The Packers organization says fans are invited. According to WISN, a limited number of free tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in person at the ticket office starting this Friday at 9:00 a.m.

Packers fans have been quick to comment on the decision. "Bums me out, he's been a great player for a long time," Ty Anderson said. University of Wisconsin-Madison student Joshua Rynish said it's about time. "I think it was a good season for him to leave on. We had a good year."
