Eau Claire (WQOW) - Plans to tear up a major downtown
street this summer are driving ahead.
Eau Claire has been planning to replace South Barstow Street
from Lake Street
to the Eau Claire
River. The total cost for the project, which
includes replacing pavement, curb and sidewalk, is estimated around $2 million.
Businesses will pay around $625,000 of the cost through special
assessments. The rest will be picked up
by the city and utilities. The city also
plans to offer incentives for finishing the project ahead of schedule, and be charged
for being done late.
The city will be holding a public
hearing February 11th and could vote to approve the project the next day. The
public works director says the city hopes to hire someone for the job in April. Reconstruction could start around Memorial
Day, with completion by the middle of August.
