Eau Claire (WQOW) - The Eau Claire School Board is about to take the final step to address a space crunch. On Monday night, the board will decide whether to buy Epiphany Lutheran.
It will cost the district $2.85 million to buy the church building. The district would borrow the money. Before it can do that, it was required to give the public 30 days notice to petition for a referendum. No signatures were turned in, so the board is set to move ahead. Epiphany will be used to house the 4K program from four district sites: Locust Lane, Longfellow, North High School and Chippewa Valley Montessori. The district also partners with 19 early-learning programs around the city. Those locations will continue operating as they are now.
Epiphany would also be home to Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education. The school district said there will be no tax increase. Principal and interest payments will come out of the operating budget. Executive Director of Business Dan Van De Water says the district expects to now save $150,000 a year in transportation costs. He also says they could save $20,000 in mileage reimbursement since teachers will no longer have to travel between the Eau Claire school sites.
If approved Monday night, the school board hopes to make the full transition to Epiphany by fall.
