MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it plans to internally investigate a flawed sting operation in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports this week exposed a 10-month ATF storefront operation intended to bust felons for drug and gun offenses was marred by missteps. The newspaper reported that the ATF operation was robbed of $35,000 in merchandise, an agent's machine gun was stolen and a document listing undercover agents was left behind. Several key members of Congress are demanding answers.
ATF spokeswoman Ginger Colbrun told the Journal Sentinel the agency is reviewing the operation.
Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin joined other congressional members from both parties is demanding accountability. In her letter to Acting ATF Director B. Todd Jones, Baldwin repeatedly admonished the ATF for a "failed operation" in Milwaukee.
