TOWN OF CLINTON (WKOW) – A 17-year-old Amish man drowned on a spring-fed pond while cutting ice in the Town of Clinton in Vernon County.
Sheriff John Spears says the 17-year-old and other boys were cutting ice on Saturday. The others delivered a load of blocks to the family's farm and upon returning to the pond, they noticed the 17-year-old was missing.
Authorities said a 911 call was made from a neighbor's phone around noon.
Emergency crews were dispatched along with two dive teams. According to the La Crosse Tribune, emergency crews used ATVs and Amish sleds to reach the pond. They found the man's hat near a break in the ice.
Divers recovered his body after he'd been in the water for more than two hours and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name has not been released.
