Eau Claire (WQOW) - Wisconsin deer harvest numbers are trending toward another year of growing success in the sport.
The DNR says more than 366,000 deer were harvested in Wisconsin last year if you add up the different seasons. That's up five percent from the year before. The DNR says good hunting conditions, high numbers of hunters and deer and the early gun-deer opener all had an impact.
Wisconsin is one of the top states in the country for deer harvest research and data, something the DNR credits to cooperative hunters.
"The largest tool we have, the largest data gathering system that we have is the registration of the deer. So all the hunters who harvest a deer and register their deer, they're all participating in a huge survey," says DNR Wildlife Supervisor Kris Belling.
The DNR adjusts the availability of tags for bucks and antlerless each season to keep the state herd in balance with the environment.
Recently a growing number of archers have joined the hunt and last fall took an all time record of more than 45-thousand bucks.
If you'd like to weigh in on how the DNR manages the deer population, late this spring it will hold public hearings across the state.
