Princeton Review names UWEC among top best value colleges

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been named one of The Princeton Review's top 150 "Best Value Colleges for 2013" in the United States.

The Princeton Review's list includes 75 public and 75 private institutions. UW-Eau Claire and UW-Madison are the only public colleges or universities from Wisconsin on the list. The best-value-colleges list appears in The Princeton Review's new book, "The Best Value Colleges: 2013 Edition," as well as on dedicated areas of the company's free website and on today's USA Today newspaper website.

When creating its "Best Value" list, ThePrinceton Review, a New York-based education services company, looked at academics, costs and financial aid — using the most recently reported data from each institution for its 2011-12 academic year — for more than 650 higher education institutions in the United States. Student surveys also provided input for the academic ratings.

"One of the more impressive aspects of the university is its inexpensiveness in relation to the quality of education being offered," the USA Today website says of UW-Eau Claire. "The school is very committed to making quality education available to most every student; 90 percent of the total average need is met, with more than 70 percent of undergraduates receiving at least some manner of need-based financial aid."

UW-Eau Claire has long been a leader in finding innovative ways to provide its students with a unique, transformative learning experience while also being mindful of costs, Interim Chancellor Gilles Bousquet said.

"We have long worked collaboratively with students to explore a myriad of opportunities to provide the kinds of high-impact experiences that add great value to their college experience and help prepare them to succeed in today's dynamic and fast-changing global reality," Bousquet said. "For example, the Blugold Commitment is a student-supported
initiative that helps fund high-impact programs through differential tuition."

The Princeton Review has included UW-Eau Claire in a variety of rankings in recent years, including the 2013 list of "Best Midwestern Colleges" and the 2012 edition of "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges," released in August 2012.
