RICE LAKE - What started as a bad-tasting cup of coffee has ended in criminal charges against a woman in Barron County.
An employee of a Rice Lake law firm called police after she noticed her coffee tasted terrible and burned her lips. She suspected a co-worker had put something in it.
Police found a large amount of a foreign substance in the coffee, which was sent to the state crime lab for testing.
The law firm fired the co-worker, Kay Lee Gysbers. The owners then discovered that she had allegedly stolen money while she worked there.
Gysbers is accused of stealing more than $10,000 from the firm's trust account. Police say she forged checks and made them out to her mother, sister, and herself. Gysbers is now charged with theft, and placing a foreign object in food. Both charges are felonies.
