Town of Lafayette (WQOW) - A cloud of smoke hung over a Chippewa County town on Tuesday night.
The Chippewa Fire District says an
old fire has rekindled buried under the snow behind the Lafayette Town Hall.
What's burning is mostly old brush. Chippewa Fire District says it's up to the
town of Lafayette to fix the problem, which they most likely will have to do using
heavy equipment. The haze made it tough to see anything off of County Road X.
Our reporter on scene couldn't even drive through 197th Street, the smoke was too thick to
see anything at all. We heard from area residents who are concerned about the
impact the smoke will have on those with health conditions.
"The smoke outside,
it just fills the pumps, it's hard for me to even see anything out there. A
couple of my customers, my regulars are asthmatics, and they've come in here
just coughing up a lung," says Paul Larson, an Express Mart Employee. Express Mart is right
off County Road X.
The Chippewa
County Sheriff's Office called it a controlled burn in the town of Lafayette. The sheriff's office said it would notify the
media if it was considered a health threat.
We contacted the town hall on Tuesday night, but there was no
answer.
