Minneapolis exploring Olympic bid?

MINNEAPOLIS (WKOW) -- Minneapolis is reportedly looking into the possibility of hosting big events, including the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak told KSTP, the ABC affiliate in the Twin Cities, he thinks the city would be a great place for any big event. he wants the city to pursue a Super Bowl, the Democratic National Convention and explore the possibility of bidding on the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Rybak also says just bidding on the Games is expensive, so he's told Meet Minneapolis to do its homework to see if the possibility of making a bid makes sense.

Melvin Tennant, Meet Minneapolis CEO, told KSTP his organization has already had preliminary talks with the United States Olympic Committee, but a formal decision to seek the Summer Games is still undecided.

Tennant says the Twin Cities have the hotel space needed, some venues already in place and will have a first-class light rail transit system in place to make a strong bid.

Bids for the 2024 Summer Games must be in by 2015 and the International Olympic Committee will pick a host city in 2017. So, if the Twin Cities decide to make a formal bid, KSTP report a decision would have to come in the near future.
