MADISON (WKOW) -- Democratic lawmakers plan to have their own public hearing in northwestern Wisconsin on the GOP's mining bill.

Republicans hope the bill will persuade Gogebic Taconite to open an iron ore mine near Lake Superior. Supporters say it would create hundreds of jobs. Opponents say it would pollute the pristine region.

Republicans held a public hearing on the bill last month in Madison. Some people from northwestern Wisconsin traveled to Madison for it, but not everyone got their chance to speak, including some people who live where the mine would go.

Senator Bob Jauch of Poplar and Representative Janet Bewley plan their own hearing Saturday at an Ashland hotel.

Republicans maintain the bill's provisions have been thoroughly vetted in multiple hearings over the last year and a half.
