Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The War On 94 between UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire comes to Zorn Arena Saturday for a basketball doubleheader between the Blue Devils and Blugolds.
Both games have plenty of postseason implications. With just three games left on their conference schedule, the UW-Eau Claire men are one-half game out of sixth place in the WIAC. Only the top six teams will advance to the conference tournament.
UWEC has a tough schedule remaining, starting with a UW-Stout team looking to rebound from a 14-point loss Wednesday night at UW-La Crosse.
"We only have three games left, but all three games matter," says UWEC men's head coach Matt Siverling, "just because the standings are the way they are now, doesn't mean by the end of the season that is where they are going to be. And I think every team in the conference knows that. And everyone is going in to these last two weeks of the season, these last three games with the mentality that they want to win because we're all jockeying for position."
In the women's matchup, the Blugolds head into Saturday tied with the Blue Devils for sixth place in the conference. UW-Eau Claire lost at UW-Sttout last month, 69-55. Beyond that, the Blugolds are looking to snap a five-game losing streak.
"It's a huge game for both teams," says UWEC women's head coach Tonja Englund, "and the reality is, it's an opportunity for us to be in the playoff hunt. So it isn't about what has happened prior that at, as much as it is a game that has huge implications for both teams. And a Stout vs. Eau Claire game is always an important game."
The men start Saturday's double-header at 3:00 P.M., with the women's game set to tip off at 5:00 P.M.
