MADISON (WKOW) -- State wildlife officials plan to hold an informational meeting later this month on the discovery of chronic wasting disease in Portage County.
The Department of Natural Resources has scheduled the meeting for February 19 at the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area's visitor center just north of Milladore.
The DNR reported in January that a deer killed in northwest Portage County during the 2012 gun season tested positive for the fatal brain disease. The finding marked the first finding of CWD in a wild deer in the county.
The first case of the disease in a farm-raised deer was detected at a Portage County farm formerly known as Buckhorn Flats in 2002.
