MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) on Friday unveiled new deer management initiatives that will be included in his next state budget.
The initiatives include the formation of a Deer Management Assistance Program (D-MAP) to improve the partnership between hunters, landowners and DNR in managing deer on private land. The Governor is also calling to update the DNR's satellite imagery technology to gather information on land cover to better inform decisions. The DNR would also begin charging fees for antlerless deer tags in counties with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), using a portion of the fees to fund surveillance efforts and improve the turnaround time of and access to CWD testing.
The recommendations stem from a July 2012 report compiled by Dr. James Kroll, the man Gov. Walker hired as the Wisconsin Deer Trustee.
"This is not a report that is going to sit on a shelf and collect dust. The budget language paves the way for progress, giving DNR the tools necessary to implement the Deer Trustee Report," said Gov. Walker.
