MADISON (WKOW) -- The City of Madison's web team has put in long hours to get its site running again after it was hacked.
Chief Information Officer Paul Kronberger says someone noticed an ad on the site Thursday that wasn't put there by city staff, so he decided to take the site down as a precaution.
Kronberger says the extent of the hacking was limited. He called it more of a nuisance.
"We do not believe or [have not] found any evidence of any data that's been breached or any confidential information that was released or anything of that nature. So it looks like the other security precautions that we have on the site were effective in preventing that," Kronberger said.
Kronberger says the city was already in the process of upgrading the software running the website when the hacking was noticed.
In the meantime, Kronberger says they have a slimmed down version of the site available. He says they activated the most popular areas, like the page to find Metro bus routes and another that updates the city's plowing situation.
He hoped to have the site back up Friday night but said it will definitely be ready to go by Monday.
