DNR trains instructors for non-English speaking hunters

Posted:

WAUSAU (GREEN BAY) -- The DNR will train a new class of hunter safety instructors Saturday, specifically to bring more Hmong hunters to the sport.

Some of those hunters say they're afraid to go into the woods after two Hmong men were involved in fatal incidents in 2004 and 2007.

The DNR is trying to minimize language and cultural barriers between hunters.

A recently-certified instructor says the course is designed to make hunters feel comfortable because they're learning from one of their own.

"They say that they actually learn more things than they would from another non-Hmong instructor. Cause you can actually get more interaction, speak in our native tongue," said instructor Boonmee Vue.

The DNR has certified 18 Hmong hunter safety instructors in the state.

Saturday, it will begin the training process for 15 more.
