Eau Claire (WQOW) - Saturday afternoon Homestead High School
of Mequon, skated against Eau Claire Memorial.
But, it was more than just the
final game of the boys hockey regular season…It was also the return of Memorial
alum Tony Navarre, who's now the head coach at Homestead.
Two years ago, he was
diagnosed with leukemia. After chemotherapy, he had a bone marrow transplant in
December of 2011. By March of 2012, he was back to work teaching.
"The sports
community was huge in getting me healthy, you know, I mean, the basketball team
did fundraisers at Homestead, the hockey team and soccer team came and helped
with all the things that I couldn't do because I was too sick, and it was just like
I got to step out of the cancer and into normal life, getting out on the rink
and just enjoying a little bit of a skate, and so it's been huge in getting me
back," says Eau Claire native and Homestead Head Coach, Tony Navarre.
