MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- Parents in Middleton who host underage drinking parties for their kids and their friends will now have a steep penalty to face.
Parents will have to pay $500 for every kid who's at the party, and doesn't belong to them. The Middleton Council passed an ordinance last Tuesday increasing the penalty for social hosts, or adults who host underage drinking parties.
Tuesday night, parents, principals and police met to talk about forming a coalition to curb underage drinking. Middleton police have given out nearly four hundred underage drinking citations since 2009.
"I would personally disagree with anyone who came to me with the argument that they can provide a safe environment. And while you might want to make that decision for your kid, I don't think you have the right to make that decision for my kid," says Capt. Chuck Foulke, with Middleton police.
Fines for repeat offenders could reach $5,000. The ordinance is slated to go into effect later this month.
