Groups file federal lawsuit against wolf hunt

MINNEAPOLIS (WKOW) -- The Humane Society of the United States and other groups have filed a lawsuit to restore federal protection for wolves in the western Great Lakes region.

They argue taking wolves off endangered lists in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan threatens the recovery of wolves throughout most of the their historic range. The suit was filed in federal court Tuesday against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Hunters and trappers in Minnesota and Wisconsin killed more than 500 wolves during the hunting season. The Michigan Legislature authorized the resumption of wolf hunting in December.
