MADISON (WKOW) -- Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he's against a so-called tonnage tax on a company looking to open a large iron mine in far northwestern Wisconsin.
During a Madison business convention Wednesday, Fitzgerald said some Republican senators have talked about including the tax in a massive bill that would change Wisconsin's mining regulations. Mining companies would be required to pay taxes according to how much iron they extract.
Fitzgerald says Governor Scott Walker would veto any bill that includes it. He also says the tax would signal that mining isn't welcome in Wisconsin.
New mining legislation aims to ease permit regulations for Gogobic Taconite's plans for an iron mine just south of Lake Superior.
