Toddler killed in accident when wheelchair used as stroller

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police have released more details in the death of a toddler hit by a car on East Washington Avenue just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

The little girl was 1.5 years old.

Police say the girl's mother, 31, told investigators she was walking on the north side of East Washington and using a wheelchair as a stroller to push the child. She said they were walking to a Walgreens near the site of the crash to buy soda and some other things

The mother told police she was in the 3700 block when she left the wheelchair unattended for a short period of time because she thought she had dropped a baby bottle, and she wanted to retrace her steps and try to find it.

She said she heard the crash, and that it appeared the wheelchair rolled down a driveway and into the street.

Police say the driver of a van, a 53-year old McFarland man, claimed he did not see the wheelchair but heard a noise and realized he must have hit something. Police say he stopped immediately and described him as very distraught over the accident.

The police report on the crash states there was no evidence the driver was impaired.

Madison Police Spokesman Joel DeSpain says the woman has no permanent address and that she says she has been staying at a Motel 6 just off East Washington on Thierer Road.

Police are investigating and ask anyone who saw the crash, or who might have information on the case, to call the police department's Traffic Unit at 266-4060.
