MADISON (WKOW)-- Tax season is in full swing. Accountants and experts are working long hours, but nothing compared to the hours volunteers at Madison's free tax help center are putting in.
Managers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance say they're dealing with a software glitch that's preventing people from getting their returns on time. It's only happening to state tax returns, not federal and as far as they know it's only happening at a handful of free tax help centers in the country.
The glitch was preventing them from sending tax returns to the IRS. Once approved by the IRS they are sent back to the tax center and then eventually get filed with the state of Wisconsin.
Volunteers spent several hours re-filing all of those returns manually. Managers say they're caught up and the problem has been fixed, but a few hundred people who filed their taxes at this location will get their state tax return a few days or even weeks later than usual.
"There were six states that went two weeks without any state returns getting accepted. So we've been battling through it, working overtime to re-submit those returns. at this point we're pretty much caught up," Site Manager Paul Swanson says.
The tax help center in Madison is by far the busiest in the state. Volunteers pump out 100-150 returns each day which leads to well over 3,000 each tax season.
Managers say that may be one of the factors that lead to this problem. They're told the software system may be struggling to keep up with the large amount of returns. Most locations only submit a handful each day, not the hundreds that come out of Madison.
