UPDATE: Man killed in snowmobile crash identified


Cornell (WQOW) - One man is dead and another in the hospital after a snowmobile crash early Monday morning.

Jacob Sargent, 39, of Cornell died in the crash. A 24-year-old man who was on the same snowmobile was injured.

The DNR says their sled hit a guardrail on a bridge over Highway 64 in Cornell. Both men were thrown 50 feet then fell another 20 feet, landing on the pavement below.

Investigators don't know who was driving but say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

This is the 12th snowmobile death this winter in Wisconsin. At this point last year there were seven.


UPDATE: Authorities have identified the crash victim as Jacob Sargent, 39, of Cornell. The injured snowmobiler has not been identified.


Chippewa County (Press Release) - On Monday, February 18th at 2:18 a.m. the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department received a report of a snowmobile crash with injury at State Highway 64 and Park Avenue in the City of Cornell. 

The snowmobile was traveling southbound on the Old Abe Trail in the City of Cornell approaching the trail bridge that crosses across State Highway 64. The snowmobile left the trail and struck the bridge curb causing both passengers to be ejected from the sled. Two subjects were on the snowmobile at the time of the crash.  

The crash is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department Recreation Division. 

Injured parties:  1 Injured / 1 Fatality

Agency's involved: Chippewa County Sheriffs Dept.,  Department of Natural Resources, Cornell Ambulance Service, Cornell Fire Department, Cornell Police Department & Mayo One.
