Fire crews respond to blaze at concrete company overnight

TOWN OF BELOIT (WKOW) -- Firefighters are called to a concrete company overnight to fight a fire.

Around 1:15 a.m., the Town of Beloit Fire Department was dispatched to Prairie Avenue Concrete at 3500 South Prairie Avenue for a commercial fire. Crews got help from the Town of Turtle Fire Department.

The fire was discovered by a Town of Beloit police officer. The officer noticed smoke and flames coming from a cement hopper. The first crews on the scene found heavy fire in the wood floor of the hopper.

The hopper was connected to the building, so they activated a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) just in case the fire went into the structure. Units from the City of Beloit, Orfordville, and Harlem-Roscoe in Illinois responded to the scene. Units from Edgerton, Juda and South Beloit, Illinois covered the Town of Beloit Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire in 15 minutes and stop it from spreading to the building. Crews remained on the scene for a couple hours to put out the fire completely and search for hot spots.

No one was inside the business and no firefighters were injured.

The damage estimates are about $20,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined, but investigators cannot rule out heat due to a propone torch being used to unthaw a water pipe.
