Madison (WQOW) - A high-ranking lawmaker has serious reservations about Eau Claire's Confluence Project.

Last week, WQOW News 18 ran a series about the Confluence Project.  After it aired, we learned that Representative Steve Nass had a number of concerns about the proposal.  Rep. Nass is the chair of the Committee on Colleges and Universities.  His spokesperson said Nass has been against the project since last summer when he filed an open records request to learn more about what was going on behind the scenes.

WQOW News 18 wanted to interview him in person about his concerns so we went to Madison to do that.  "I had reservations out of the box, in that, once a project like this would go ahead, that other university campuses are going to want to do it.  That is a concern because it's 10 blocks from campus and the mission of the campus is not to really get involved in local, private enterprises.  When you look at all the players, it's all pretty much taxpayer dollars.  The question that struck me, is, 'If this does not work, who's going to be on the hook?'  Well, it's going to be the state of Wisconsin taxpayers through UW-Eau Claire," said Rep. Nass (R) 33rd Assembly District.

We'll hear more from him in the next few days.  We'll also have reaction from project organizers later this week.
