Durand (WQOW)- A local school district is preparing for snow a day before it is supposed to fall and it could result in students being sent home early.
The Durand School District, like many rural schools, says it has to be careful when it comes to snow, because its buses travel long distances in hilly terrain to pick up and drop off students. The superintendent says he's heard driving conditions might be bad by the end of the school day and is preparing for anything.
"One of the first things we will do tomorrow is see how much snow is on the ground and what the projections could be and maybe decide not to even bring the students in the building," explains Durand Superintendent Greg Doverspike. "But if we do bring them in because we are not sure what is going to happen and then it gets progressively worse, we would then probably look to send them home early."
"We have lots of hills and valleys and that creates a problem but they sand the hills good and go over them multiple times and stay ahead of it," points out Pepin County Highway Department Foreman Brent Bauer. "So we'll be at it all day."
Durand has already had four snow days this year. Doverspike says the district already will have to add two school days in the summer because of it.
