APPLETON (WKOW) -- Governor Scott Walker wants to remove worker residency laws in the state.

He announced the plan in his budget address on Tuesday and continued to push the plan Thursday while touring a plant in Appleton.

Walker wants to keep local governments from enforcing rules that require people to live where they work.

"Much as we've done with the changes we've made in terms of collective bargaining where hiring and firing can be based on merit and ultimately pay based on performance, this is another example where people can be hired on their merit, not just where they reside," said Walker.

There have been reports that the Governor's plan would affect about 127 cities and villages.

Madison has a limited version of the residency rule.
