Champions crowned at WIAA wrestling state meet Saturday


MADISON (WKOW) -- For the 70th time, the WIAA held its championship round of the state boys wrestling tournament. Sun Prairie junor Jared Scharenbrock became the first Cardinals wrestling champ in 32 years. Scharenbrock defeated Eric Schmid of Verona with a 14-2 major decision at 145 pounds.

In Division 2, River Valley senior Seth Liegel won his second straight state title, defeating Mitchell Fucile of Chilton/Hilbert on a tech fall at 152 pounds. Liegel joins his father Ralph, who is also a 2-time state champion of River Valley.

In Division 3, Ethan Soderstrom of Lancaster won his second straight state title Saturday. Soderstrom beat Ross Peterson of Ladysmith with a 5-3 decision at 160 pounds.
