MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin cheese makers could be gaining ground on their rivals in California, due to a change in milk prices.
Wisconsin still leads the nation's in cheese production, but state officials say California producers have had a milk price advantage until now.
California's Department of Agriculture has temporarily raised the price farmers there are paid for their milk in an attempt to help struggling milk producers.
Cheese experts Wisconsin say that could be good news for cheese producers in the Badger State.
"If the prices level out we could definitely look to the buyers of California cheese and say, given all being equal price wise, would you like to buy Wisconsin cheese and what we feel is the better cheese," said John Umhoefer, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. "So, I think it could have a real impact."
Umhoefer says California law still allows dairy farmers there to be paid about $2 less per hundred pounds of milk than Wisconsin dairy farmers.
