Wis. native's film nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Picture

WAUWATOSA (WKOW) - A Wisconsin native's film didn't win Best Picture at the Academy Awards Sunday, but like most say, it was an honor just to be nominated.

Michael Raisler is a Pius High School graduate whose parents live in Wauwatosa. He is the Executive Producer of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," the small budget film that takes a loving look at a Louisiana community upended by Hurricane Katrina. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, although it didn't win any Sunday.

His parents, Ann and John Raisler, watched the Oscars with a bottle of bubbly. They told WISN-TV the story of how Michael went to Louisiana four years ago and it took him two years to get the script and storyline just right. Their son got the movie bug at the age of six.

"Michael said, 'I am going to make movies. I'm going to blow things up and make movies that's what I am going to do.'" Once they started making the film, Michael sent his mother a message on her phone. "It was a little video; a shack blowing up and it said 'See, I told you I was going to blow things up!'"

Raisler's non-profit company is based in New York. After his movie won a big award at the Sundance Film Festival, his mother told him she thought his picture would be nominated for an Oscar.
