Sequester appears inevitable

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The U.S. is about to go over another fiscal cliff; there appears to be almost no chance we'll avoid the sequester cuts.

A couple of feeble attempts were defeated Thursday night in the Senate.

Tomorrow, congressional leaders are scheduled to meet with President Obama.

Technically, they have until 11:59 p.m. Friday to avoid the $85 billion in cuts, but each party is already blaming the other.

"Democrats are... we want solutions. Republicans want sequestration," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

"We've done our job. The president hasn't offered a plan. Senate Democrats haven't passed a plan," said House Speaker John Boehner.

The immediate impact of the cuts is not clear.

The administration has warned that the cuts will mean a reduction in defense capability, fewer federal services and both federal and state layoffs.

Republicans counter that the impact is being hyped.
