Area boys and girls hockey teams win state championships


Madison (WQOW) - It was a historic day for area high school hockey. Both the Eau Claire Memorial boys and Hayward/Spooner girls hockey teams walked away as state champions Saturday.

The Hayward/Spooner girls co-op beat the Onalaska co-op 5-2. Eau Claire Memorial boys beat Verona 6-1. 

Stephen Kelley will have highlights and reaction in sports at 6:00 and 10:00 p.m.


Madison (WQOW) -- The Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team and Hayward/Spooner girls hockey team advance to the state championship games. You can watch both state championship games, live, on WQOW-News 18 on Saturday.

The Old Abes punched its ticket to the title game after knocking off Superior 5-3 on Friday night. Memorial will be looking for its first title since 2008 when it faces Verona at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Madison. The puck will drop at approximately 2:15 p.m.

On the girls side, the Hayward/Spooner co-op will play in its first-ever state title game at noon. The Hurricanes will be opposed by Onalaska.
