Madison (WQOW) -- For the second time in program history, the Old Abes hockey team returns to Eau Claire as state champions.
Eau Claire Memorial skated to a 6-1 win over Verona. Those six goals are the most in a state championship game in seven years.
The last time the Old Abes won a state title was in 2008. That squad was undefeated. The 2013 version took a different route, going winless in its first three games and finishing second in the Big Rivers Conference. But the end result is the same -- a state championship coming back to Eau Claire.
"I think we really peaked at the right time of the season. Yeah, we had a rough start, but we worked ourselves to the top of the mountain. And now that we're there, it feels great," says junior forward Jacob Bresser.
Junior goalie Alex Geving adds: "This team came together as a family and we played as a family the whole year. I was so shocked when that final buzzer went off. This has been a dream all year."
"This team is unique and there was something special about this team from the beginning of the year," says senior forward Brady Bollinger. "We knew if we played Old Abes hockey, if we played the way we could play, that we were a huge threat to this state."
"Only one team a yea gets to walk away with a win in their last game. And to be able to say that our team was the one to do that, there is no greater feeling in a high school sport," adds senior defenseman Nathan Pientok.
