UPDATE: Missing drug dog found

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- A specially-trained law enforcement dog from Wood County, missing since Sunday, has now been found.

Toro, the German shepherd, took off from his handlers during a vehicle drug search in Portage County.

Toro has been part of the Wood County Sheriff's Department for two years.  He was found in a wooded area.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WKOW) -- A central Wisconsin sheriff's office is searching for its drug dog that went missing Sunday night while on a call.

Wood County authorities say their K9 named Toro and his deputy handler were called to assist a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper on a drug search of a vehicle in Portage County.

After helping the trooper, Toro ran into a wooded area and hasn't returned. Officials searched through the night but were unable to locate the dog.

Officials say Toro is not considered dangerous unless provoked. He's a dark brown and black German shepherd weighing about 80 pounds. He could have a black leather leash attached to a metal collar.

Toro began his partnership with Wood County Sheriff's Office handler Deputy Joe Zurfluh in 2010 after the department's former K9 named Kilo suddenly developed a tumor and passed away.

Authorities ask anyone with information to contact law enforcement or call Wood County Communications at (715) 421-8702.
