GOP Senators to opposes Gov. Walker's voucher plan

MADISON (WKOW) -- The president of the Wisconsin Senate tells The Associated Press a majority of GOP senators will not support Governor Scott Walker's plan to expand private school voucher programs to new school districts.

Senate President Mike Ellis(R-Neenah) said Wednesday Walker's proposal will have to be "drastically changed." He said the voucher school plan, as well as Walker's plan to offer vouchers for special education children and create a charter school oversight board, are "unacceptable to a majority of the senators."

Republicans hold an 18-15 majority in the state Senate.

Sen. Ellis says talks are underway on how to amend the governor's proposals into a plan that could be supported by the Senate and in the Republican-controlled Assembly.

Gov. Walker's spokesman had no immediate comment.
