UPDATE: One person taken to the hospital following Altoona house fire



Altoona (Press Release) - This is updated information on the structure fire on 3204 Hamilton Ave.

The person injured in the fire is Shirley Zetter, 85.  She is expected to recover from her injuries.  The American Red Cross will be assisting her.  

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation although it presently does not appear to be suspicious.  



Altoona (WQOW)- There was a fire at a home in Altoona Thursday afternoon.  It happened on Hamilton Avenue.  

Firefighters say an elderly woman who was inside at the time was able to get out and was taken to the hospital. It's not clear yet what caused the fire but firefighters say the home is destroyed.

Press Release On March 7, 2013 at approximately 2:44 P.M. Altoona Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a possible structure fire at 3204 Hamilton Ave in the City of Altoona.  Upon arrival of the first fire fighters at 2:48 P.M. the home was involved with fire and heavy smoke was present.

An elderly female resident of the home had been assisted from the home by bystanders prior to the arrival of the Altoona Fire Department personnel.  She was transported by ambulance to Mayo Hospital due to injuries suffered in the fire.  Her condition is not known.  She is not being identified by Altoona Fire Department tonight.

Altoona Fire Department requested mutual aid from Eau Claire Fire Department and Township Fire Department to assist with fire suppression efforts.

A portion of the home collapsed and the remainder of the home has heavy smoke, heat and water damage.  The home is valued at $80,700 and is considered to be a total loss.

Cause and origin information relating to this fire is not being released this evening. 

The bystanders who assisted the woman are not being identified tonight.

The Altoona Fire Department wishes to thank the bystanders for their assistance in helping the women escape the home.  In addition, Altoona Fire Department appreciates the assistance received from Eau Claire Fire Department and Township Fire Department.

A fire broke out at a home on Hamilton Avenue in Altoona.  Crews from Altoona, Eau Claire and Township fire departments were on scene. Firefighters say one person was inside at the time and was taken to the hospital.

We don't know how they're doing, and it's not clear yet what caused the fire. 


Altoona (WQOW)- Our reporter on scene says it looks like the fire has died down but there is still smoke coming from the roof.

Crews from both the Altoona and Township fire departments are at a home on Hamilton Avenue. The fire began Thursday afternoon. 

It's not clear if anyone was inside the home at the time of the fire.
