Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team won its first-ever NCAA tournament game on Wednesday. Saturday, the Blugolds look to make the program's first-ever trip to the Division 3 Frozen Four.
Eau Claire advances to the quarterfinals thanks to a 4-2 win over St. Johns on Wednesday. Next up is a match up with two-time defending national champion St. Norbert. UWEC took the season series from the Green Knights this season, going 2-1-1, including a win and a tie in De Pere. The team says they like their chances on Saturday.
"With our team, the depth that we've got, I'm not afraid to bring our team anywhere and play anybody at their rink," says senior forward Kurt Weston. "We've responded well on the road, it's never really been a problem for us. So, "
Head coach Matt Loen adds: "I've always said that if you can come out of the NCHA, you've got a great opportunity to win a national championship. Unfortunately we're going to have two good teams playing in the quarterfinals, but it is what it is. And the winner of that game is going to have a great opportunity to win a national championship."
Eau Claire and St. Norbert drop the puck at 7:00 p.m. in De Pere. WQOW-News 18 will have highlights on Sports Overtime Saturday night.
