Local highway could be designated as a National Guard memorial

EAU CLAIRE - Soldiers from western Wisconsin could soon get a special honor.

Two area lawmakers have just introduced a bill to designate State Highway 128 as the 128th Infantry Memorial Highway.

The nearly 40-mile stretch of road in Pierce and St. Croix Counties runs through the heart of the home of the 128th battalion, which has units in Eau Claire, Menomonie, River Falls, New Richmond, Rice Lake and Arcadia.

Mike Hanke, from Chippewa Falls, came up with the idea. He's a member of the 128th and served in Iraq. Hanke says the designation would be a fitting tribute to the men and women of the 128th who have served our country going back to World War I.

Some of those Wisconsin Army National Guard members are currently on alert for possible deployment to the Middle East.
