Paper or plastic? City committee could study that question

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Paper or plastic? That's a question the city of Eau Claire could soon be answering.

The city council voted Tuesday night to form a committee to study the sustainability of paper and plastic bag use. The 14-person committee will explore ways to reduce, reuse, or recycle bags within the city.  An educational campaign, a central location for recycling, or even a fee for using certain types of bags are some of the ideas the committee could pursue.

"These solutions are numerous and varied and really need further study in order to address the unique needs of our city. When you think about citizens using 21 million disposable plastic bags alone each year, that is a real concern," says Jackie Pavelski, with the Eau Claire City Council.

The committee hopes to offers some possible recommendations this fall.
