Charges filed in Eau Claire chase case

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - There's new information on the circumstances surrounding a traffic stop and chase in Eau Claire last week.

Charges have now been filed against Scott Belisle. According to the charges, an officer pulled him over for a broken headlight. The officer said Belisle seemed confused and evasive so he tried to get Belisle out of his SUV. That's when Belisle allegedly accelerated rapidly, dragging the officer. He wrote in his report, "At this point I did fear for my life and believed I was in danger of great bodily harm or death."

The report says the officer was able to push himself away and avoid being run over, but he was almost hit by an oncoming car. He says he was already walking back to his squad car when he saw a second officer standing, with his gun drawn, and heard him fire several shots.

Police told WQOW News 18 on Tuesday the first officer was still being dragged when the other made the decision to fire and he may not have seen that his partner had freed himself because it was dark and he was focused on his target. An investigation is still being conducted.

Belisle was captured after crashing his SUV. He now faces three felonies, including recklessly endangering safety. He is free after posting bond on Tuesday.
