UPDATE: Fitchburg standoff suspect arrested miles away

Posted:

FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Authorities said a suspect in a standoff with Fitchburg police officers after an incident of domestic violence apparently slipped away even before officers deployed, and was arrested miles away in Madison.

31-year old Joshua Leake of Fitchburg is jailed on tentative charges of strangulation, possessing a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct.

Fitchburg police lieutenant Chad Brecklin said 911 callers reported Leake's wife had left the family apartment on Chalet Gardens Road early this morning, but Leake was armed, and the couple's two children remained with him inside.

Authorities deployed a SWAT team response at Leake's apartment. Several nearby streets were closed to traffic, and some neighbors were temporarily evacuated. Fitchburg police officials said police negotiators spoke to Leake over the phone, but he would not disclose his location.

Brecklin said movement in the apartment was observed by officers on-scene, and officers had to continue to consider the possibility an armed man was inside. Brecklin said officers went into the apartment and got the children out at seven a.m., about an hour after developing information Leake was likely in Madison.

Madison police spokesperson Joel DeSpain said Leake was arrested after officers responded to a condominium on Park Edge Drive on the city's southwest side.

Neighbor Donna Sweeney told 27 News officers with guns trained on their condominium complex spent forty five minutes trying to coax Leake out of a condominium unit, before he surrendered. Sweeney said she was told by police to remain in her unit during the ordeal, and was afraid an armed man might threaten her.

Leake had been in an acquaintance's condominium. Brecklin said he was not armed, but weapons were seized from his Fitchburg apartment.
