Chancellor candidate gets boost

MADISON (WKOW) -- A group of UW-Madison students made an eleventh hour endorsement of University of Chicago Law School Dean Michael Schill to become UW-Madison's next chancellor.

"Schill has put student priorities at the top of his list," thirteen student leaders wrote of Schill in a letter Friday to officials involved in the campus' chancellor search.

A five member, special committee of the UW Board of Regents met Friday to consider Schill, U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank, Johns Hopkins engineering dean Nicholas Jones, and outgoing Michigan State provost Kim Wilcox for the Madison campus' top job. In closed session, committee members were scheduled to interview the finalists, and reach a decision on one candidate to recommend to the full Board for approval.

Sophomore David Gardner of the Associated Students of Madison said he signed the letter endorsing Schill, because during campus visits by the finalists, Schill stood alone in vowing to lobby for more state support to control tuition.

Freshman Courtney Jackson of the Associated Students said Schill's emphasis on increasing diversity at the university helped convince her to offer her endorsement.

Letter signing students said they worried Blank and Wilcox's commitment to the university's shared governance structure was weak, and would leave students with less of a voice in shaping the school's future.

The student letter made no reference to Jones. 27 News was unable to reach Jones to confirm he was still actively seeking the chancellor post.

Regent committee members are expected to negotiate work terms with their recommended choice before submitting the recommendation. The new chancellor will receive a salary within a pay range that could result in annual pay of more than $500,000.
