Lake Placid, NY (WQOW) -- The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team continues to make program history, knocking off Utica College (NY) in the NCAA DIII Frozen Four to advance to the national championship game.
The Pioneers would find the net first, when Louis Educate beat Brandon Stephenson for a goal at the 10:00 minute mark of the 2nd period. But the Blugolds would answer in a big way. Jordan Singer scored on a backhand at the 13:15 mark to tie the game. Then, just 22 seconds later, it was Ross Anderson scoring on a wrister to give Eau Claire the 2-1 lead.
The Blugolds did not waste time adding an insurance goal in the 3rd. DIII All-American Jack Callahan's shot from the blue line was deflected in by Kurt Weston to give Eau Claire the 3-1 advantage. Weston would find the net again later in the period to push the lead to 4-1. Then, after Utica pulled its goalie, Anderson added his second goal on an empty-netter to close out the scoring.
Stephenson lived up to his All-American billing, proving to be stout once again in the crease. The senior goalie stopped 31 shots, allowing a single goal, to earn the win.
UW-Eau Claire will face Oswego State for the DIII National Championship on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
