Badgers the #5 seed in West Region, face Ole Miss

Posted:

CHICAGO (WKOW) -- The Badgers had no time to dwell on their loss to Ohio State in the championship game of the Big 10 tournament. About an hour after that 50-43 loss, the Wisconsin men's basketball team learned they would begin NCAA tournament play on Friday, against the Ole Miss Rebels.

The Badgers are the No. 5 seed in the West Region and the Rebels are the No. 12 seed. The two teams will play in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ole Miss, considered a bubble team coming into the day, punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament by defeating Florida on Sunday to win the SEC tournament championship.

Marquette University earned the No. 3 seed in the East Region and will open against that region's No. 14 seed, Davidson.

In Sunday's Big 10 title game, Deshaun Thomas scored 17 points to help the 10th-ranked Buckeyes outlast the  No. 22 Wisconsin.

The Buckeyes were rewarded with a No. 2 seed in the West Region and will play the west's No. 5 seed, Iona.

The Badgers (23-11) shot just 38.3% from the field in the game. Traevon Jackson was the only member of the team to score in double figures, tallying 10 points.

The game was close for most of the second half, but the Buckeyes seized on a cold spell by the Badgers to move in front down the stretch.

"We got beat physically inside a little bit, so I think that told a lot on the offensive glass," Badgers coach Bo Ryan said after the game.

Wisconsin advanced to the tournament's final game with a pair of impressive victories over No. sixth-ranked Michigan and third-ranked Indiana.
