MADISON (WKOW) -- Hundreds of people are helping support a cure for neuromuscular diseases at the MDA Muscle Walk in Madison.
Participants have spent the past few months raising more than $30,000 this year, which all stays with the local Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwestern Wisconsin chapter. Money goes towards medical services for local families and research.
Organizers say the annual walk is a chance for families to come together and celebrate.
"We really kind of call it our family reunion, where our families get together and they celebrate the fact that they get to be involved and to fight back against their disease," says Rebecca Hildebrandt, executive director of MDA of Southwestern Wisconsin.
27 News reporter Tony Galli was host of Sunday's MDA Walk. Meteorologist Laurie Mercurio participated in the event, after she raised more than $1,600, which is enough to send two kids to MDA camp. WKOW is a proud sponsor of the MDA Walk.
