Air traffic control tower may close in Janesville

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- Janesville's Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport could soon have to shut down its air traffic control tower due to the automatic federal cuts that kicked in this month.

If a deal isn't reached soon, the entire staff of the control tower could lose their jobs.

"If that happens, gas sales at the local business will go away, the airport restaurant will not get clientelle to eat there, which means they're losing business and possibly they go away, along with all the employees that they hire," said Air Traffic Manager Earl Arrowood.

Arrowood also says safety would be a concern, because pilots would have to coordinate air traffic themselves.
