Poll reveals split in WI views on vouchers

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A new poll reveals a clear split in Wisconsin opinions about voucher schools.

A Marquette University law school poll on Tuesday said 52 percent of respondents would like to see the voucher program expanded statewide or at least in larger districts with some under performing schools. And 42 percent want it frozen or ended altogether.

The poll says 72 percent of Wisconsinites have a favorable view of public education, while 18 percent have unfavorable view.

When initially asked their thoughts on voucher schools, 49 percent had no opinion. Pollster Charles Franklin says that leaves room for leaders on both sides to shift public opinion.

The poll questioned 1,060 respondents, including one in three from the city of Milwaukee. The margin of error is +/- 5 percentage points.
