Chippewa Falls (WQOW) -- Chippewa Falls returns plenty of talent from the 2012 team that won the WIAA Division 1 State Softball Championship.

Seven seniors are on the Cardinals roster, including Evie Schaller, the 2012 state player of the year.  There are some big-time expectations this season at Chi-Hi, and the Cards say they're embracing those high expectations.

"I think obviously, you know the kids all know what we accomplished last year," says Cardinals head coach Jared Faherty, "we have eleven people back from the state tournament roster. I think we're really just approaching it like we really did last year. You know that we know we have a competitive team and that all we can really do is go out and try to get better every day."

"Being the team with the target on our back is going to be tough," says Chi-Hi senior outfielder Alissa Adams, "because we need to go into every game saying this is a new challenge. We do have so much talent, like the talent on our team is unbelievable."

"I don't think it's any different this year as it was the past few years," Schaller says, "I think we've always had a target on our back it seems like from all the success we've had over the years. So I think we're going to go out as the same way, just working ten times harder, but I think we can do it this year."

The Cardinals will open their season March 27, when they travel to a tournament in Orlando, Florida.

"It'll be a good opportunity for us to see where we are at early," says Faherty, "get field time, get out on the dirt, get some sun and hopefully it will be an advantage to us when we get back up here."
