Sun Prairie Jazz Band raises money to perform in NYC

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- The Sun Prairie High School Jazz Band has been chosen to play at the prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition in New York City.

They're one of 15 bands from across the country invited to play in New York City with members of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Wyton Marsalis. They need your help to raise money to send the band to New York City. The jazz band will perform May 11-12.

The finalists were among nearly 100 high school jazz bands across the country that entered the competition.  Each school submitted recordings of three tunes performed from charts from Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington library.

They're trying to raise $25,000 by the end of April to send the high school students there for four days. The event is not sponsored by the school system.

To donate send a check to: Lee Wilson, Sun Prairie High School, 888 Grove St., Sun Prairie, WI 53590 or call Sun Prairie Jazz Band Director, Steve Sveum at 608-834-6780.
